It is interesting to read about Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti's recent remarks about Ramzaadon ( offspring of Ram ) vs Haramzaadon ( illegitimate offspring) , especially considering the fact that she faces criminal charges for adultery and criminal intimidation.
At
a time when the BJP has been relying more on its development agenda
than the Ram issue, it would be indeed pertinent to track the sequelae
to the Sadhvi's comments. She reminds one of the vitriolic outbursts of
the Sadhvi Ritambhara era. That was another Sadhvi who , despite her
pious outbursts, proved to be vulnerable to the matters of the heart and
flesh. No harm in that, as long as one keeps the " Sadhvi" tag aside.
And not surprisingly, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti cites her as a mentor.
The
Prime Minister has been fast enough to counter this episode by
forbidding BJP parliamentarians from addressing the nation. Whether
this would be an effective deterrant needs to be seen. Indeed, Modi
would be eager to further his carefully nurtured pro-development agenda
rather than harp on religious themes to win over the electorate, since
the latter has proved to be a relatively ineffective agenda in the
recent past.
One is reminded of the Ram Janmabhoomi era,
when Ram was the centrepiece of the BJP's campaign. Whether the party
would revert to that agenda is another issue. The embers of the Ram era
have been stoked once again. And , regardless of whatever happens in the
future, there is the possibility that Ram might find a place back in
the agenda, at least amongst some of the rank and file of the
organization.
Whichever way things turn, as citizens we
would hope that the development agenda would not be derailed, and good
governance takes precedence over religious sentiments. Now that Narendra
Modi has come to power on a solid pro-development platform, it will be
necessary to maintain continuity of the same. We would fervently wish
the best to the Modi regime.
